Court Adjourns Aluko Olabanji’s Counterfeit Dollar Notes Trial To July 16
The trial of Lagos businessman, Aluko Olabanji, who is facing charges for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit US Dollar notes, has been adjourned to July 16, 2025. The case, initially scheduled to continue before the Easter vacation, was put on hold due to the unavailability of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) next witness.
According to the EFCC prosecutor, the witness scheduled to testify in the case had been transferred out of Lagos, prompting a request for more time to arrange for the witness’s presence in court. The court granted the adjournment, allowing the case to resume in mid-July.
Olabanji, alongside one Ikhidero Sehgun, who is currently at large, is facing a seven-count charge for allegedly being found in possession of 4,367 pieces of counterfeit $100 bills. The charges are based on the discovery of bills with serial numbers from the 2004 series, which were reportedly known to be counterfeit. The offence is punishable under the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provisions) Act, Cap C35, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The court will reconvene in July to continue the proceedings in this high-profile case.
