Adelabu Steps Down As Power Minister, Sets Sights On Oyo Governorship
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has officially resigned from his position in the Federal Government as he prepares to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu stated that his exit will take effect from April 30, 2026, allowing for a smooth and orderly transition of responsibilities.
The letter, which was routed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve, noting that his tenure was marked by commitment to national development, particularly in the power sector.
Adelabu described his appointment as a privilege, adding that he was honoured to contribute to reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electricity sector, a key driver of industrial growth and economic progress.
He explained that his decision to resign is driven by his intention to fully concentrate on his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State. According to him, the move aligns with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which requires political office holders to step down before contesting elections.
Adelabu also recalled that his governorship aspiration dates back several years, noting that he had earlier resigned from his role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 to pursue the same goal.
His resignation signals a significant political shift ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle, especially in Oyo State, where he is expected to emerge as a major contender in the governorship race.
