Beyond the Office: How Tokunbo Wahab Is Redefining Environmental Leadership in Lagos

For many Lagos residents, environmental management is often noticed only when there is a problem  blocked drainage, refuse accumulation, flooding or other issues that require urgent attention. But the approach of the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has increasingly placed emphasis on being physically present where such challenges occur, rather than leaving the responsibility entirely to officials working from behind their desks.


Wahab has developed a reputation for taking direct interest in environmental situations across the state, regularly visiting affected locations to assess developments and ensure that necessary interventions are carried out.

His hands-on approach has distinguished him from the traditional perception of a commissioner whose role is largely administrative, as he is often seen taking responsibility for situations requiring immediate attention.


In some instances, the commissioner has personally intervened to address urgent environmental concerns while awaiting the completion of the necessary official approval and funding processes.


Such personal interventions have, in some cases, helped bridge the gap between the urgency of an environmental challenge and the time required to complete official procedures. The approach reflects a willingness to respond promptly to situations where delays could worsen conditions or further inconvenience residents.


Beyond the politics and bureaucracy that often surround public office, Wahab’s environmental stewardship has therefore become an interesting subject of discussion in Lagos social and administrative circles.

His regular presence in the field, engagement with officials and attention to environmental enforcement have helped project an image of a commissioner who considers the cleanliness, safety and overall orderliness of Lagos a responsibility that requires more than issuing directives.


For Wahab, the emerging narrative is one of a public official seeking to combine the authority of his office with personal involvement in the everyday environmental challenges confronting Lagosians.
