House of Representatives Proposes Renaming Federal University Wukari After Gen. TY Danjuma
In a notable development, the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to rename the Federal University, Wukari, in Taraba State, in honor of retired General Theophilus Danjuma, recognizing his substantial contributions to the nation.
The motion, brought forth by representatives Gaza Gbefwi, Mark Useni, and Ayuba Dampar, was adopted during a plenary session on Wednesday.

Gbefwi, who led the discussion, highlighted Danjuma’s impactful military service and philanthropic efforts, particularly in education and healthcare.
Renaming the university after him would not only honor his legacy but also inspire future generations to engage in national development,” Gbefwi stated.
The proposed new name, TY Danjuma Federal University, Wukari (TYDFUW), is contingent upon necessary amendments to the institution’s enabling Act.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas presided over the session where the motion was debated.Established in 2011, the Federal University, Wukari, aims to expand access to higher education and promote research in the country.
Danjuma served as Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 and later as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003.
Beyond his military credentials, Danjuma is well-regarded for his philanthropic work through the TY Danjuma Foundation, which supports health, education, and community development initiatives across Nigeria.
The House has tasked its Committee on University Education with engaging relevant stakeholders and facilitating the legislative measures necessary to advance the renaming process.
While the proposal marks a significant step, it remains subject to the completion of required legislative and administrative procedures before any official name change can occur.
This initiative reflects a broader trend in Nigeria to honor individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the country’s progress and development.
