Reps Push for JAMB Admission Deadline Extension to Ensure Fair Access for Students

The House of Representatives has urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the admission deadline for the 2026/2027 academic session.

This appeal was made by Oboku Oforji, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, during a press briefing at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Oforji warned that the current tight schedule could hinder qualified candidates from securing placements in public and private universities.

He emphasized that an extension would allow institutions to better process outstanding applications and admission offers.

“It is essential that JAMB extends the admission deadline for our children,” Oforji stated, noting that the committee has formally reached out to JAMB leadership to advocate for this change.

Highlighting the enthusiasm among young Nigerians eager to pursue higher education, Oforji stressed the need for measures that ensure deserving candidates are not excluded due to time constraints.

Under the existing timetable, public universities must finalize admissions by October 31, while private universities have until November 30.

Other tertiary institutions are expected to complete their processes by December 31, 2026.Concerns have been raised about the feasibility of these deadlines, particularly for candidates still awaiting admission offers.

The admission exercise was previously disrupted by the temporary unavailability of JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), which institutions rely on for processing.

With CAPS now operational, JAMB has directed institutions to expedite their admission processes and advised candidates to accept offers promptly to meet the deadlines.

Oforji reiterated the importance of collaboration among JAMB, university authorities, and other stakeholders to streamline the admission process.

He remains optimistic that JAMB will consider the extension request to prioritize students’ interests and enhance access to education.

As discussions unfold, stakeholders in the educational sector are keenly awaiting JAMB’s response to the House’s appeal, hoping for a resolution that benefits aspiring students nationwide.
