Ladoja Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Awaits Staff of Office
Former Governor of Oyo State, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has officially ascended the revered throne of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking a new chapter in the ancient city’s traditional leadership.
The coronation rites were completed on Friday at the historic Ose Meji shrine in Ibadan South-East, where the sacred Akoko leaves were placed on his head by the Afobaje of Ibadanland, Chief Waheed Popoola of Labosinde Compound. The ritual, which drew large crowds, signified the final traditional step in confirming Ladoja as the new paramount ruler of Ibadan.
Dignitaries, monarchs, politicians, and cultural enthusiasts thronged the city to witness the historic event, which blends centuries-old Yoruba tradition with modern state recognition.
Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to formally present the new monarch with the staff of office and other instruments of authority at a state ceremony to be held at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, in the coming days.
A Long Road to the Throne
Ladoja’s ascension follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025.
His journey to the throne was not without controversy. For years, debates over the Ibadan chieftaincy system and the requirement that only beaded-crown obas could ascend to the Olubadan stool created tension. Ladoja himself had resisted wearing a beaded crown until earlier this year, when he finally agreed, paving the way for his succession.
Observers say his elevation represents a reconciliation between tradition and legal reforms, as well as a sign of Ibadan’s resilience in preserving its unique succession system.
What Lies Ahead
As the new Olubadan, Ladoja is expected to leverage his experience as a former governor and politician to champion unity, peace, and development in Ibadanland. Many also anticipate he will use his reign to strengthen cultural heritage and empower the city’s youth.
The state presentation of his staff of office is expected to attract top government officials, traditional rulers, and Ibadan indigenes at home and abroad.
