Victor Osimhen Breaks Record, Becomes Nigeria’s All-Time Top Scorer in UEFA Champions League
Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has etched his name into Nigerian football history by becoming the country’s all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League.
Osimhen reached the milestone on Tuesday night after converting a 16th-minute penalty to give Galatasaray a 1–0 victory over Liverpool in Istanbul. The goal, which proved decisive, took his Champions League tally to 10, surpassing the previous Nigerian record of nine goals held by former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins.
The 26-year-old forward began his Champions League journey in 2019 while playing for Lille, scoring his first goal in the competition against Chelsea. Since then, his clinical finishing and consistency have propelled him to the top of Nigeria’s scoring charts on Europe’s biggest stage.
Osimhen’s achievement is even more remarkable considering that he surpassed Martins’ record in just 17 Champions League appearances, compared to Martins’ 34. His strike against Liverpool also ended Galatasaray’s seven-year wait for a home win in the competition, underlining its historic significance for both club and country.
