Sowore Regains Freedom After Four Days In Kuje Prison

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has regained his freedom after spending four days in detention at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Sowore was released on Monday, October 27, 2025, after fulfilling the bail conditions granted by a Kuje Magistrate Court where he was arraigned alongside 13 others arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.

The activist was arrested on October 23 in Abuja alongside Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and other protesters. They were later charged with unlawful assembly and public disturbance before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id.

The court granted bail in the sum of ₦500,000 each, with strict conditions that included the presentation of National Identification Numbers (NINs), three-year tax clearance certificates, and the surrender of international passports.

Confirming his release, Sowore announced on X (formerly Twitter):

“Leaving Kuje Prison in Abuja after being detained illegally for four days by @officialABAT illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.”



Sowore’s detention had sparked public criticism from civil society groups and rights advocates, who described it as another attempt to silence dissenting voices.
