Displaced Kwara Teachers Urge Governor for Mercy and Reinstatement

In an emotional plea, 1,220 dismissed teachers from Kwara State, collectively known as the ‘Sunset Teachers,’ are calling on the state government to reconsider their termination and reinstate them.

The teachers made their case during a news conference held on Saturday in Ilorin.Deputy Coordinator of the Sunset Teachers, Mr. Wasiu Yunusa, explained that these educators were hired in January 2019, just before the previous administration ended.

The current government later terminated 2,214 teachers, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. While some of their colleagues were reinstated, about 1,220 teachers remain without jobs.

Yunusa pointed out that when the new administration took office, the governor had assured them they would not be penalized for being employed late by the previous regime.

“About a year after that promise, we found out online that all 2019 hires had been dismissed,” Yunusa lamented, expressing frustration over unfulfilled commitments.

The teachers had previously sought clarification from the governor, who directed them to reapply for their positions. However, many are still awaiting a response regarding their reinstatement.

Yunusa highlighted the difficulties faced by the affected teachers, many of whom have aging parents and dependents relying on their support.

He emphasized their struggle to fulfill family obligations since their dismissal. The group has submitted multiple letters to the governor, urging him to reconsider their cases.

“We believe that under your compassionate leadership, our long-awaited hope can become a reality,” Yunusa stated.

He urged the governor to act swiftly, emphasizing that reinstating the teachers would be a significant act of mercy and justice. Such a decision would not only restore their livelihoods but also strengthen families and further educational progress in the state.

As the situation develops, the teachers remain hopeful that their appeals will resonate with the governor, paving the way for their return to the classroom.

Their plight underscores the ongoing challenges faced by educators in Nigeria and the critical need for compassionate governance.
