NLC President Ajaero Slams TUC for Rejecting ₦70,000 Transport Intervention

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has criticized the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for rejecting the ₦70,000 transport intervention approved by the Federal Government.

Ajaero contends that TUC lacks the authority to dismiss an agreement it did not negotiate.

Speaking on Channels Television’s on the program “The Morning Brief” , Ajaero accused TUC of abandoning the negotiation process that led to the transport intervention.

“You can’t oppose something you never advocated for,” he asserted.

This intervention, intended to support workers for six months, has stirred controversy, especially since Ajaero believes it should have prompted TUC to negotiate for a higher amount rather than outright rejection.

Ajaero took issue with TUC President’s claim that minimum wage discussions would occur in August 2027, stating it contradicts legal stipulations.

He added, “They threatened us and said they are not part of it,” emphasizing that the NLC is moving forward independently regarding the transport aid.

He further criticized TUC for not advocating for better wages during negotiations, asserting that their opposition to the ₦70,000 intervention was unfounded.

“Now that we have secured this, they are free to push for higher amounts, but they cannot reject what we have achieved,” he said.

Ajaero highlighted that the ₦70,000 intervention aligns with the current national minimum wage, making it a significant milestone just months before the scheduled minimum wage negotiations in April 2027.

He underscored that this breakthrough was the result of persistent labor advocacy, including strike threats, demonstrating the effectiveness of collective action in securing better worker welfare.

As the debate continues, Ajaero urged TUC to focus on supportive measures instead of rejection, particularly as workers face rising costs due to increased energy prices.

In closing, he reiterated that the NLC would continue to fight for better conditions for workers, regardless of TUC’s stance, emphasizing the importance of unity within the labor movement to advocate for the welfare of Nigerian workers.
