Adewale Arojah Arrested Over Alleged N18m Facebook Fraud

,
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Adewale Arojah for allegedly impersonating a popular prophet on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting victims of more than N18 million.

Arojah, who was described by the police as the son of a prophet, allegedly created and operated a Facebook account bearing the identity of renowned cleric Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun, using the platform to offer fake prophecies and purported prayer services to victims.

The arrest followed a complaint filed with the police on October 3, 2026, by Akogun after several members of the public reportedly drew his attention to fraudulent activities being carried out through a duplicated Facebook profile in his name.

According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the complaint prompted the Divisional Police Officer of the Ilaro Division to deploy intelligence and detective operatives to identify and apprehend the suspect.

Babaseyi said the police eventually tracked Arojah to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, following sustained digital monitoring and intelligence analysis.

The police spokesman said the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation to using the cleric’s identity to deceive people seeking spiritual assistance.

He was quoted as admitting that he used the fake profile to issue false prophecies and offer prayer services to victims in Nigeria and abroad, collecting money from them in the process.

Preliminary findings by the police indicated that the suspect allegedly targeted individuals who contacted the prophet through his Facebook platform, gained their confidence and subsequently persuaded them to make payments for various spiritual services.

The command said the fraudulent activities had allegedly resulted in financial losses exceeding N18 million among the victims.

Following his arrest, Arojah was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The police said the ongoing investigation would determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, establish whether other individuals were involved and facilitate prosecution where sufficient evidence is established.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved in the operation, describing the arrest as a demonstration of effective intelligence gathering and prompt response to cyber-related crimes.

Ojajuni also reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling online fraud, identity theft and other forms of cybercrime across Ogun State.

The police consequently urged members of the public to be vigilant when interacting with religious leaders, celebrities and other public figures on social media, advising them to verify the authenticity of accounts before making payments or sharing personal information.

The command said the latest arrest further demonstrated its resolve to prevent cybercriminals from exploiting social media platforms to defraud members of the public.
