Buratai Hails Obiano’s Security Legacy As Former Governor Turns 71
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd), CFR, has described former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano, CFR, as “a visionary leader whose developmental and security legacies remain unmatched in the South-East,” as the former governor marks his 71st birthday.
In a birthday tribute, General Buratai, who described Obiano as a friend and colleague, recalled the former governor’s transformative eight-year tenure, highlighting enduring landmarks such as the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri; the Anambra International Conference Centre, Awka; and extensive road networks that opened up rural communities and strengthened economic activities across the state.
He noted that Obiano brought the experience and discipline acquired from his career in banking and the oil industry into public governance, particularly through fiscal discipline, strategic planning and private-sector efficiency.
However, the retired military chief placed particular emphasis on Obiano’s security architecture and his cooperation with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies during his tenure.
“As Chief of Army Staff, I witnessed firsthand the extraordinary cooperation you extended to the Nigerian Army and other agencies in confronting the hydra-headed security challenges in Anambra and the South-East,” Buratai stated.
He noted that through Operation Python Dance and Operation Kpochapu, the former governor provided critical operational support, including vehicles, equipment and logistics, while also offering strategic direction and moral support to security agencies.
According to Buratai, the collaboration contributed significantly to strengthening security in Anambra and creating an environment conducive to economic growth, investment and peaceful living.
The former Army Chief further highlighted Obiano’s substantial investments in security, including the provision of hundreds of fully equipped vehicles and other logistical support for the Police, Army and Navy.
He said these interventions helped restore investor confidence, revitalise commercial activities and demonstrate that sustainable development cannot thrive without a secure environment.
Buratai also commended the former administration for maintaining consistent payment of salaries and pensions while implementing major infrastructure projects, describing the balance as evidence of fiscal prudence and responsible governance.
Born on August 8, 1955, in Aguleri, Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Lagos, an MBA, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). He also holds a papal knighthood conferred by Pope Francis.
Concluding his tribute, General Buratai prayed for continued good health, longevity and fulfilment for the former governor.
“As you mark this milestone, I pray Almighty God grants you many more healthy and impactful years. Your legacy serves as a beacon for current and future leaders,” he said.
General Buratai wished Chief Willie Obiano a happy 71st birthday and expressed his appreciation for the former governor’s contributions to the security and development of Anambra State.
