Court Sentences Nnamdi Kanu To Life Imprisonment
Newsextra can confirm that the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple terrorism-related charges.
Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution had successfully established its case, noting that the offences for which Kanu was convicted carry either death or life imprisonment under the Terrorism Prevention Act. The court opted for life imprisonment, citing the need to uphold national security while considering mitigating factors presented by the defence.
Today’s proceedings were marked by heightened security presence and intense public interest. Earlier disruptions in the courtroom led to Kanu being briefly removed by security operatives following his objections to the process, but order was restored before the sentencing resumed.
The Federal Government had earlier argued for the maximum penalty, insisting that Kanu’s actions contributed to violent incidents across the South-East. Defence counsel, however, maintained that the trial was politically motivated and vowed to challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal.
With this judgment, the case enters a new phase, as IPOB supporters and human rights observers react to what is considered one of the most consequential court decisions of the year.
