France, Norway Battle for Group I Top Spot as Mbappe, Haaland Renew Goal Rivalry
Football fans are set for one of the biggest clashes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday as France take on Norway in a decisive Group I encounter featuring star forwards Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
The two prolific strikers have enjoyed impressive starts to the tournament, scoring four goals each to trail only Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who leads the Golden Boot race with five goals.
France head into the encounter with a slight advantage after convincing victories over Senegal and Iraq. Les Bleus require only a draw to secure top spot in the group due to their superior goal difference.
Norway, however, have also impressed, recording victories over Iraq and Senegal to qualify for the knockout stage. Haaland has been central to the Scandinavian side’s success, marking his maiden World Cup appearance with outstanding performances.
Despite Norway’s strong form, Haaland has downplayed his team’s chances against the reigning European giants, describing France as favourites not only for the match but for the entire tournament.
The highly anticipated clash will also see France play under assistant coach Guy Stephan following the temporary departure of head coach Didier Deschamps, who left the team’s camp after the death of his mother.
Stephan said the French squad remained focused despite the difficult circumstances and extended support to Deschamps and his family.
A defeat for France could complicate their route to the final by setting up a difficult Round of 32 fixture against Ivory Coast, with potential knockout meetings against Brazil, England and Argentina later in the competition.
Elsewhere, Spain will face Uruguay in Guadalajara, aiming to finish top of Group H, while Cape Verde seek another upset against Saudi Arabia to continue their remarkable World Cup campaign.
In Group G, Egypt will battle Iran for first place in a match overshadowed by controversy after local authorities in Seattle designated the fixture as part of the city’s Pride celebrations. Officials from both Iran and Egypt have reportedly objected to the association.
Belgium will also be aiming to reach the knockout rounds when they take on New Zealand in the group’s other fixture.
