Gas-Laden Tanker Bursts Into Flames In Lagos
A potentially devastating fire incident was averted in Lagos on Thursday after a gas tanker burst into flames along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of the state.
The incident, which occurred near Ola Farm Bus Stop in the early hours of the day, triggered an emergency response from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other security and traffic management agencies.
According to LASEMA, the tanker was reportedly travelling at excessive speed when it rammed into a road bump, causing the driver to lose control. The impact led to a tyre burst, which immediately ignited the gas-laden vehicle.
Emergency responders quickly battled the inferno and successfully contained the fire before it could spread to nearby houses, shops and other vehicles.
Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were recorded during the incident.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police also secured the area, managed traffic, and kept residents and motorists away from the danger zone while firefighting operations were ongoing.
Authorities said recovery efforts were underway to remove the burnt tanker from the road and restore normal vehicular movement.
Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, urged motorists to drive responsibly and obey speed limits, especially around speed bumps and within residential communities, noting that reckless driving could easily lead to avoidable disasters.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring prompt emergency response and safeguarding lives and property across Lagos State, while urging residents to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free emergency lines, 112 and 767.
