Lawyer Writes Open Letter to President Tinubu, Decries Government’s Failure on Insecurity
A Lagos-based legal practitioner, George Ogunjimi, Esq., has written an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, expressing grave concern over what he described as the federal government’s continued failure to tackle the worsening insecurity across the country.
In the strongly worded letter titled “Open Letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR., The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” Ogunjimi said the government’s inability to address terrorism, banditry, and communal killings reflects years of neglect, corruption, and complicity by successive administrations.
According to him, Nigeria’s security crisis has reached a critical stage due to the “deliberate erasure and refusal to name victims and identify their murderers,” which he described as a form of “complicity on the part of the government.”
He lamented that “no killer has ever been brought to justice swiftly,” alleging that some military commanders have refused to engage terrorists even when their locations were known. He also criticized the rehabilitation of captured terrorists, saying, “When captured terrorists are termed reformed bandits and assimilated into the military and mainstream society, this can be truly construed as collaboration between the government and the terrorists.”
Ogunjimi accused political leaders of prioritizing appeasement over justice, stating that, “It is perplexing seeing politicians spend more time appeasing warlords and elevating murderers to media darlings than enforcing justice. The system isn’t broken it’s abandoned and totally corrupted.”
He faulted the government’s approach to national security, condemning what he termed “the glorification of speeches and tolerance of lawlessness.” According to him, while innocent Nigerians are killed and displaced, “terrorists are granted airtime and handshakes this is not diplomacy, this is surrender.”
Calling for decisive leadership, the lawyer urged President Tinubu to rise to the challenge of protecting citizens and restoring law and order. “Enough with the deflections and foreign blame games,” he said. “Let your faith stand upright for action knowing that the only response to evil is overwhelming force.”
Ogunjimi warned that the government’s inaction could make history judge it harshly, adding, “Sir, this is the crucible of leadership: humility, urgency, and resolve. Swallow pride. Move swiftly. Protect the innocent. Or the world will name the wound you refuse to treat and tag you and your government as failures.”
The legal practitioner concluded his letter by reaffirming his goodwill towards the President but appealed for swift and sincere action, saying, “Please Sir, do not disappoint us all your well-wishers.”
