Ogunjimi urges accountable Leadership, Stronger Institutions For Nigeria’s Future

Legal practitioner George Bamidele Ogunjimi has called for accountable political leadership, stronger constitutional institutions and an inclusive national identity as critical measures for Nigeria’s development.

Ogunjimi made the call in a paper titled “Independence, Leadership, Identity and the Future of Nigeria: The Political Leadership Aspect,” delivered to the Nigerian Association in Southwark Borough, London, United Kingdom, on October 1, 2026, to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day anniversary.

He noted that although independence in 1960 marked the end of colonial rule, the country’s continuing challenge was to translate political sovereignty into effective governance, national unity and human development.According to him, Nigeria’s future depends not only on the individuals occupying political offices but also on the strength of its institutions, constitutional principles and citizens’ participation in governance.

He identified respect for constitutional limits, accountability, responsible management of public resources, protection of citizens’ rights and respect for political opposition as essential qualities of effective leadership.

The legal practitioner also stressed the importance of the rule of law, describing it as a mechanism for resolving political disputes peacefully and ensuring that citizens of different ethnic, religious and regional backgrounds enjoy equal citizenship.

Ogunjimi maintained that Nigeria’s diversity should be treated as an opportunity for national development rather than an obstacle to unity, adding that a common national identity could coexist with the country’s various cultural and religious identities.

He further called for greater youth participation in governance, noting that civic education and public engagement were necessary to prepare future leaders and strengthen democratic institutions.

The lawyer urged political leaders to prioritise education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure, security and economic development, emphasising that nation-building required collective contributions from government, businesses, civil society and citizens.

He concluded that the enduring significance of independence lay in Nigerians’ ability to strengthen democratic institutions, deepen citizenship and build a political system capable of serving present and future generations.
