Omolara Olumegbon Urges Constituents To Embrace Urban Farming For Food Security

 In a dynamic call to action, Honourable Omolara Olumegbon Omotade Oyekan, the lawmaker representing Lagos Island Constituency 1, has urged residents to engage in home-grown farming as a means to enhance food security and ensure a sustainable future for the community. This appeal was made during the 9th edition of the constituency stakeholders meeting held today, themed “Enabling Food Security for a Sustainable Future: Youth Participation and Home-Grown Farming.”

Addressing audience of constituents, local leaders, and youth representatives, Hon. Olumegbon emphasized the critical importance of urban agriculture in contemporary society. “We live in an era where food security is paramount. By participating in home-grown farming, every household can contribute to alleviating hunger and enhancing nutrition within our community,” she stated.

The lawmaker highlighted the dual benefits of urban farming: the potential for economic empowerment and the cultivation of healthier food options. “We need more farmers. As we foster an environment where our youth can learn, innovate, and engage in agricultural practices, we lay the foundation for a sustainable future,” she affirmed.

Hon. Olumegbon encouraged constituents to utilize available spaces in their homes, such as balconies and gardens, to grow vegetables and other nutritious produce. She also urged local organizations, educational institutions, and stakeholders to collaborate in providing training and resources for aspiring urban farmers.

The meeting served as a platform for dialogue, where market women, elders, artisan and others shared ideas and experiences related to urban farming and also urged the lawmaker to do more of her kind gesture by contributing to the growth of her constituency.

Olumegbon explained her role in seeking collaboration with United Nations to support Lagos island on Job opportunity, water etc and they are observing us and gave us the assurance of a reboust partnership soon.

Also the APC Chairman in Lagos Island, A.G.O Sodiq, Lagos State Women Leader Okoya Thomas, and Head of GAC Tajudeen Olusi have praised Omolara Olumegbon for her excellent representation of Lagos Island Constituency 1. 

They expressed satisfaction with her performance over the past year. Other dignitaries present at the event includes Moshood Mayegun, APC Deputy Chairman in Lagos, Rasheed Giwa, former commissioner in Lagos, Rotimi Fashola, SA on Agric to the Lagos State Governor, and Tijani Atoyese Olusi, Lagos Island Local Government Chairman, represented by his Vice Chairman Akinyemi Rosul Eshinlokun.”

As the event concluded, Hon. Olumegbon reiterated her commitment to supporting urban farming initiatives in the constituency. “Together, we can build a resilient community where food is not only accessible but also cultivated with care and responsibility,” she concluded.
