Onanuga Fires Back at Obi:Your Remarks on Diaspora Support Were Clear

In a recent exchange, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, took to social media to rebut Peter Obi’s claims regarding his comments about Nigerians living abroad.

Onanuga asserted that Obi’s original message, made during a speech in Manchester, was not distorted as the former governor claimed.

Onanuga’s post emphasized that Obi failed to adequately clarify his remarks, stating, “Nobody twisted your statement. Thank you for affirming it again.” This statement followed Obi’s defense, where he accused political adversaries of misinterpreting his words about the diaspora community.

Obi had expressed gratitude towards Nigerians overseas, acknowledging their financial contributions that support families back home, covering expenses like education, healthcare, and rent. However, he stressed that his intention was not to encourage Nigerians abroad to forsake their families.

Instead, Obi aimed to highlight the reliance many citizens have on relatives overseas for basic needs. “Our goal must be to build a nation that provides jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education, and economic opportunities for its citizens,” he articulated.

In his defense, Obi reiterated that he was advocating for a Nigeria that supports its populace, rather than one that neglects them. He maintained that his comments should not be misconstrued as a call for Nigerians in the diaspora to abandon their loved ones.

The back-and-forth between the two political figures illustrates the ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as the nation prepares for upcoming elections. With each side standing firm in their interpretations, the dialogue reflects broader concerns about national identity and responsibility.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how these statements will resonate with voters, particularly those in the diaspora who play a significant role in the country’s economy through remittances.

The exchange serves as a reminder of the delicate balance political leaders must maintain when addressing sensitive issues that affect millions of citizens both at home and abroad.
