Pirlo Agrees to Lead Italy’s National Team
Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has agreed to become the next head coach of the Italian national football team after accepting a long-term proposal from the Italian Football Federation.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup winner has reportedly given his verbal approval and is expected to complete the move by signing his contract in the coming days after the remaining formalities are concluded.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development on X, stating that Pirlo had accepted the long-term project presented by senior football figures Paolo Maldini and Leonardo.
Pirlo’s appointment comes after extensive discussions on the future of the Azzurri, with the federation placing its confidence in the former Juventus and AC Milan star to rebuild the national team and restore its competitiveness on the international stage.
The 47-year-old enjoyed one of the most successful playing careers in Italian football, helping Italy lift the 2006 FIFA World Cup while winning multiple domestic and European titles with AC Milan and Juventus.
Since retiring as a player, Pirlo has ventured into coaching, leading Juventus during the 2020/21 season and guiding the club to Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana triumphs.
An official announcement is expected once all contractual procedures have been completed.
Pirlo’s arrival follows reports that former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola declined the opportunity to take charge of Italy, opting instead to prioritise family commitments over an immediate return to international football.
