President Tinubu Meets With Wike, Fubara, Rivers Lawmakers
In a strategic move to douse the lingering political tension in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday night held a closed-door meeting with key political stakeholders from the state at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Among those in attendance were Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, and several lawmakers from the state assembly.
While details of the high-level meeting remain sketchy at press time, sources close to the Presidency revealed that the gathering was convened by President Tinubu to broker peace and foster reconciliation between the opposing factions in the state’s political landscape.
Rivers State has witnessed months of political unrest, with a power tussle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, threatening governance and stability in the oil-rich state. The crisis escalated into a bitter rift between the executive and legislative arms of the state government, prompting nationwide concern.
President Tinubu, known for his hands-on approach to political conflict resolution, reportedly urged all parties to put aside personal interests and prioritize the peace, development, and stability of Rivers State.
Although no official communiqué was issued after the meeting, it is believed that the President advised the feuding camps to commit to a peaceful resolution and uphold the sanctity of democratic institutions.
