Sanwo-Olu Endorses Hamzat, Calls For Continuity

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has thrown his weight behind Hamzat’s governorship ambition, describing him as an experienced administrator capable of sustaining the state’s development agenda.

Sanwo-Olu, who endorsed his deputy as his preferred successor, argued that Lagos requires continuity in leadership rather than experimenting with an entirely new direction.

The governor recalled Hamzat’s decision to withdraw from the 2018 governorship race following consultations with APC leaders and subsequently agree to serve as his running mate.

He described the decision as evidence of his deputy’s loyalty, maturity and commitment to collective political interests.

Sanwo-Olu said his seven-year working relationship with Hamzat had strengthened his confidence in his leadership abilities, noting that the deputy governor had remained committed to the administration.

He also highlighted Hamzat’s experience in previous administrations, recalling his service as Commissioner for Science and Technology under Tinubu and Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure during Fashola’s administration.

According to the governor, Hamzat contributed to the computerisation of government operations, the elimination of ghost workers from the state payroll and the foundation for residents’ registration.

He also recalled his involvement in infrastructure development, including the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge project.

Sanwo-Olu argued that Hamzat’s experience across successive administrations positions him to provide the leadership required to complete ongoing strategic projects.

Among the projects he identified as requiring continuity were the second phases of the Blue and Red rail lines, the Fourth Mainland Bridge, the proposed Lekki-Epe International Airport, the Omu Creek project, food hubs and logistics parks.

The governor stressed that continuity should involve completing unfinished projects, correcting existing shortcomings and introducing fresh initiatives to meet the changing needs of residents.

He further described the planned transition as an opportunity for Lagos to demonstrate political stability, expressing satisfaction that he and his deputy were preparing for a change of leadership without disagreement.

Sanwo-Olu urged Hamzat to sustain the achievements of successive administrations, remain responsive to public concerns and ensure that important development projects were not abandoned.
