Tinubu Approves 500,000 Solar Lights to Illuminate South-East Households
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the distribution of 500,000 solar-powered lights for rural households in the South-East region of Nigeria.
This announcement was made during the launch of the Renewed Hope Light-Up initiative, where 26 transformers and 10,000 solar-powered lights and fans were distributed to communities in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State.

Kalu revealed that 42,000 households in the constituency are set to benefit from this initiative, with the first batch of 10,000 solar lights and fans expected to be delivered within two weeks.
A pilot scheme has already seen 1,000 units distributed, with local representatives confirming their functionality.
The initiative aims to provide tangible benefits from the Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly for households that have struggled with unreliable electricity supply.
Kalu described this provision for 42,000 households as unprecedented, highlighting its potential to enhance access to electricity in underserved communities.
Emmanuel Ndubuisi, the lawmaker representing Bende South Constituency, commended the intervention, noting that some communities have been without electricity for nearly two years due to transformer failures.
Peter Oko, a representative from the project contractor, Solar Systems Nigeria, stated that the initiative will also create opportunities for youth training and empowerment, assuring beneficiaries of the company’s commitment to quality service delivery.
Earlier, Emma Trump Eke, Director-General of the Ben Kalu Campaign Council, termed the intervention a landmark project for Bende Federal Constituency, emphasizing its significance in addressing energy needs.
With this initiative, the Tinubu administration aims to improve energy access and enhance the quality of life for rural residents in the South-East, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria.
