Dr. Betta Edu Celebrates 40th Birthday by Empowering Benue IDPs
Dr. Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, celebrated her 40th birthday in a meaningful way by giving back to internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Ichua camp in Makurdi, Benue State.
During her visit, she announced a series of support measures aimed at enhancing the livelihoods and education of those affected by displacement.

On Tuesday, Edu unveiled plans to distribute essential livelihood equipment, vocational training, scholarships, and food assistance.
Among the items announced were 40 sewing machines, grinding machines, refrigerators, and deep freezers, along with scholarships for 40 deserving children.
The initiative also includes tailored training programs for 40 women, designed to equip them with skills for economic independence.
Additionally, food assistance in the form of bags of rice was provided to attendees.
“This intervention is part of my personal commitment to address the humanitarian crisis and support displaced communities in rebuilding their lives,” Edu stated.
She emphasized that the goal is not just immediate relief but to empower beneficiaries with the resources and skills needed for sustainable living.
Edu highlighted her efforts as complementary to the initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, focusing on long-term solutions to the challenges faced by IDPs in the region.
She urged parents to prioritize their children’s education despite the hardships they face, reinforcing that education is a pathway to a better future.
Edu also noted that her scholarship program has been ongoing since 2016, benefiting children in her political ward in Cross River State.
Reflecting on the conditions at the IDP camp, Edu expressed relief at the improvements made since her last visit in October 2023, praising the collaborative efforts of local and national leaders.
As her birthday celebration turned into a day of service, Edu’s actions underscored her commitment to humanitarian causes and the empowerment of vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
The support measures announced during her visit are expected to make a significant impact on the lives of the displaced individuals and families in Benue State.
