Senate Urges Security Overhaul Following Deadly Taraba Attacks
The Nigerian Senate has called for an immediate security offensive in border communities across Taraba, Plateau, and Bauchi states after a deadly attack in Binnari community resulted in approximately 80 fatalities.
Lawmakers voiced their concerns during a plenary session, emphasizing the need for enhanced protection for vulnerable residents in the wake of escalating violence by armed bandits.

Senator Isa Shuaibu Lau moved a motion of urgent national importance, highlighting the alarming trend of repeated attacks on rural areas.
He warned that these incidents not only threaten lives but also displace residents and disrupt their daily lives.
“The persistent activities of armed bandits undermine the government’s constitutional duty to safeguard citizens,” Lau stated, calling for urgent action to restore peace in the affected regions.
The Senate’s resolution is a response to the rising death toll, which varies among reports but is believed to be as high as 80
.In light of the attack, which occurred shortly after Jumu’ah prayers on October 23, the Senate urged security agencies to establish additional security camps and enhance surveillance in these vulnerable communities.
The incident involved gunmen invading the area, firing indiscriminately, looting, and setting shops ablaze, causing widespread panic among residents.
The Senate emphasized that neglecting these security issues could lead to further loss of life and displacement, stressing that no community should be left vulnerable to criminal groups.
Lawmakers also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to provide immediate relief materials to affected communities.
The attack’s timing and method raised concerns about the security coordination between states, as the gunmen were suspected to have crossed from Plateau State.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the North-East and North-Central regions of Nigeria, where armed groups continue to threaten rural settlements.
As the Senate observed a minute of silence for the victims, they reiterated the importance of immediate and coordinated action to prevent future attacks and support those affected by the violence.
The urgent call for enhanced security measures reflects a growing recognition of the need to address the humanitarian crisis spurred by these ongoing attacks.
The Senate’s intervention seeks to provide a lifeline to communities under siege while holding security agencies accountable for protecting citizens and restoring stability.
