Switzerland Welcomes Nigeria’s Ebola Patient, Husband Isolates in Zurich

Switzerland has confirmed the arrival of Nigeria’s Ebola index patient, a 42-year-old woman diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, along with her husband who accompanied her during evacuation.

On Monday, the Nigerian government facilitated her transfer to Switzerland via a medical plane. Ali Pate, the coordinating minister of health and social welfare, reported that the patient is now in stable condition, showing significant clinical improvement and clear communication.

The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) stated that the patient is receiving treatment at Geneva University Hospital (HUG).

Her husband, classified as a close contact, has been placed in isolation at Zurich University Hospital (USZ).

Swiss authorities assured the public that the situation poses no health risk, as both hospitals are equipped to handle infectious diseases like Ebola, ensuring the safety of healthcare workers and other patients.

“The current situation does not pose any risk to public health in Switzerland,” the FOPH emphasized in its statement.

They are collaborating with the university hospitals in Geneva and Zurich, alongside relevant cantonal authorities, to effectively manage the incident.

Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, a federal councillor in Switzerland, expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s health minister during a recent telephone conversation, acknowledging the efforts of Nigerian healthcare professionals in caring for the couple before their evacuation.

In response, Minister Pate thanked both the clinical and public health teams in Nigeria and Switzerland, as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO) for their support.

He reassured the public that contact monitoring and containment measures are ongoing in Nigeria.

As the situation develops, authorities remain vigilant, wishing for the continued recovery of the patient.
