Tokunbo Wahab Warns Lagos Residents Against Cart Pushers
The Lagos State Government has urged residents to stop patronising unregulated cart pushers, warning that their activities are contributing to improper waste disposal and worsening environmental challenges across the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning on Saturday while commenting on the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held in the Festac area of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area. The exercise was attended by the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, his wife, Oluremi Hamzat, and other stakeholders.
Wahab said indiscriminate disposal of refuse by some unregulated waste collectors on road medians, streets and drainage channels could undermine the state’s efforts to tackle flooding and maintain a cleaner environment. He stressed that the government was working to establish a more efficient, sustainable and accountable waste management system across Lagos.
According to him, the success of the state’s waste management system also depends on the quality of services provided by government-approved operators.
Wahab said the ministry was addressing challenges at landfills, dumpsites and major waste collection points while engaging Private Sector Participation operators to improve service delivery. He added that residents also had a responsibility to dispose of their waste properly and keep their surroundings clean every day, rather than relying solely on monthly sanitation exercises.
