UEFA Introduces Special Debut Patches For Champions League Players

UEFA has announced a new initiative that will see players making their first-ever appearances in the UEFA Champions League receive special debut patches during the 2026/27 season.

The European football governing body announced the initiative on Wednesday, explaining that the patches are part of a new partnership with Fanatics, a sports merchandise and collectibles company.

The small patches, which will be placed on the sleeves of eligible players, will carry the word “debut” alongside the iconic UEFA Champions League starball logo.

According to UEFA, the initiative is designed to mark the significance of a player’s first appearance in Europe’s elite club competition.

After the match, the debut patch will be carefully removed from the player’s shirt and transferred to Topps, the trading card company owned by Fanatics.

The patch will then be embedded in a unique, one-of-one autographed Topps trading card featuring the player. Each card and patch will be authenticated before being made available as a special collectible.

Players who begin a Champions League game on the bench will also qualify for the initiative if they are brought onto the pitch and make their first appearance in the competition.

However, simply being named among the substitutes will not be enough to qualify. A player must actually feature in the match before receiving the debut recognition.

The initiative adds a collectible dimension to one of the biggest milestones in European club football, allowing players to preserve a physical reminder of their Champions League debut while also creating a unique item for football memorabilia collectors.
