Wike: I Still Control Rivers Political Structure Ahead of 2027
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he remains in control of the political structure in Rivers State and the FCT, despite no longer serving as governor of the oil-rich state.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he said holding an elective office was not a requirement for controlling a political structure.
Responding to questions about the influence of the incumbent Rivers State governor, Wike said political control was not determined solely by occupying the Government House.
“You do not need to be governor before you can be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry; therefore, I am in charge. So also in FCT,” he said.
The former Rivers governor also stated that his return to the state was partly aimed at reconnecting with his political base and engaging with his supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, his presence in Rivers was not about relocating from Abuja but about remaining active and monitoring developments in his home state.
“It’s not about relocating; it’s about coming home to reconnect with my people and talk to them, not taking chances,” Wike said.
He further suggested that he would not remain passive ahead of the 2027 presidential election, questioning whether he was expected to “fold my hand for Atiku to come and win the election.”
Wike, who served as Rivers State governor from 2015 to 2023, also pointed to his administration’s record in the state, particularly the construction of 12 flyovers, as evidence of his capacity to deliver major projects.
Speaking about his current role in Abuja, the minister said his administration had also changed perceptions about what could be achieved in the Federal Capital Territory through the execution of major projects.
Wike maintained that his political influence remained significant, insisting that his activities in Rivers State and the FCT would continue to attract attention as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
